Elder Abuse Litigation

At Rudman Winchell, our attorneys have extensive knowledge regarding elder abuse and neglect laws, and the depth of experience necessary for elder abuse litigation. We pride ourselves on being diligent advocates for victims of injuries and losses that result from elder abuse and neglect. Rudman Winchell’s lawyers recognize that elder abuse is a rapidly growing problem in Maine. Elderly people often have to rely on others for help and become necessarily dependant on others to care for them and help them make decisions. Sadly, many seniors are taken advantage of, and mistreated by, family members or caregivers. A high percentage of abusers include the elder’s family members, caregivers, or advisors. As a result, hundreds of thousands of elder abuse cases go unreported or ignored every year.

Elder abuse and neglect in Maine takes on many forms, including:

  • Physical abuse
  • Neglect
  • Financial abuse
  • Abandonment
  • Isolation
  • Abduction

The signs of elder abuse may be very subtle, particularly when the abuse is something other than physical. A few things to look for are:

  • Changes in the physical appearance, grooming or general behavior of the elder
  • Unusual banking activity
  • Sudden changes in estate planning, or transfers of assets, deeds or trusts

Any of these warning signs – alone or combined – may suggest the elder has fallen victim to neglect, abuse or financial exploitation.
