He provides a broad range of real estate, corporate, business, bankruptcy, and commercial advice to clients in all of Maine’s business and non-profit sectors including aerospace, construction, energy, healthcare, forest resources, commercial real estate development, technology, manufacturing, insurance, retail, and finance. Hans is regularly involved in negotiating the purchase and sale of commercial real estate, commercial finance, the purchase and sale of businesses, commercial contracts, leasing transactions, and representing creditors and debtors in bankruptcy proceedings. He is a member of the Business Law Section of the American Bar Association.
Hans S. Peterson devotes a significant portion of his practice to complex commercial financing transactions, including SBA 504 loan closings; the formation and structuring of real estate holding and leasing enterprises; advising and structuring tax deferred like kind exchanges for real estate and personal property; and the creation and structure of business enterprises and partnerships.
Hans’ corporate and business practice also includes non-profit clients in the education, transportation, economic development, and charitable non-profit organization sectors, where he advises those clients in the areas of tax-exemption qualification and compliance; governance; and commercial transactions including contracts, mergers, asset acquisitions, joint ventures, leases and financing transactions.
As manager of the firm’s affiliate Penobscot Exchange Services, LLC, Hans provides qualified intermediary services for individuals and businesses engaging deferred and simultaneous exchanges under IRS Code §1031.
Hans S. Peterson is the secretary and a director of the Challenger Learning Center of Maine Board, as well as a trustee of John Bapst Memorial High School where he serves on the buildings and grounds committee. He is a past board chair of Treats Falls House and Harbor Family Services.
Hans graduated with honors from Brigham Young University in 1994. He earned his law degree from Northeastern University School of Law, during which time he served as a Judicial Intern for the Honorable James F. Queenan, U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge.
In their free time, Hans and his family enjoy biking, boating, camping, and hiking during the warm weather months, and cross-country and downhill skiing during the snow season.
